Xcel Energy Inc. (XEL - Free Report) recorded third-quarter 2017 operating earnings of 97 cents per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 92 cents by 5.4%. Earnings were 7.8% higher than the year-ago quarter.
The improvement in earnings was due to higher electric margins, lower effective tax rate and a fall in operating and maintenance expenses.

Minneapolis-based Xcel Energy’s third-quarter revenues of $3,016.9 million missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3,191 million by 5.4%. Revenues also marginally lagged the prior-year quarter figure of $3,040.1 million by 0.8%.
Segment Results
Electric: Revenues decreased to $2,783.6 million from $2,799.9 million in the reported quarter.
Natural Gas: Quarterly revenues decreased 3.5% to $214.3 million.
Other: The segment recorded revenues of $19.1 million in the quarter, up 4.4%.

Operating income in the reported quarter was down 1.1% year over year to $818.4 million.
